Essential information we think you should know about vaping itself, vaping regulations, & safety around vaping!
Vaping Fundamentals: Facts, Safety, and What You Need to Know
Vaping involves inhaling an aerosol (often miscalled “vape smoke”) created by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and base ingredients like propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). While generally less harmful than smoking, vaping isn’t risk-free—nicotine remains addictive and may affect heart health and fetal development, and even nicotine-free products can release harmful chemicals. To reduce risks, never vape around kids or pregnant individuals, avoid unregulated or homemade liquids, and always follow manufacturer instructions.
In Alberta, you must be 18+ to purchase vape products, and while there’s no current ban on flavors, regulations are constantly updating. Nationally, vaping is governed by the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act, which caps nicotine content at 20 mg/mL and requires health warnings and excise stamps.
Common myths—like “it’s just water vapor” or “nicotine-free vapes are safe”—are false. Secondhand vapor contains chemicals, and while vaping can help some quit smoking, results vary. Device types range from disposables to advanced mods, each with different costs, maintenance needs, and environmental impacts. Whatever your choice, always store products safely, charge properly, follow local bylaws, and stay informed. Vaping can be a harm-reduction tool for adult smokers—but it’s not without risks.
